Mathematics Department
SIP Goal:Globalization & Greening

Department Vision or Purpose:These are relatively new goals for the Math Department. Thus, we first set out to define what globalization and greening mean to us.
Globalization:The Math Department considered the concept of globalization from two perspectives, the teacher and the student. For the teacher we thought about the importance of learning from other teachers whether in the U.S. or not, their pedagogical approaches to teaching particular topics in mathematics.By observing and implementing multiple approaches to introducing students to a topic will help to target the students’ multiple learning styles and will help to make the learning of mathematics more interesting for the student. From the student’s perspective, understanding what other students are learning and the types of problems these other students are solving help our students be better prepared to deal with a variety of expectations and succeed in an ever changing, competitive environment.

Greening:The Math Department sees the Greening SIP goal as an effort to help students and faculty understand the impact our daily decisions have on the planet. Thus, we as teachers make every effort to minimize the amount of paper we generate, to recycle whenever possible, and to turn off lights when we are not using a room. A secondary goal of Greening is to provide our students with opportunities to incorporate nature in their study of math and appreciate their environment. To help raise awareness of global issues in our students’ minds, we have revamped and/or generated projects that we will have the students work on during the 2010-11 school year.

Implementation:

  • Middle Schoolstudents participate in World Math Day (2008) and American Math Challenge (2009)
  • Math Counts, CML, Middlementary Math Bonanza (2010)
  • Math Team participates in 15 different competitions, ranging fromlocal and state competitions to national competitions (ARML, AMC, David Essner, Florida Math League, FAMAT(2008))
  • Logs and exponential problems from a private school in Turkey are used in the Pre-Calculus Honors classes.
  • Middle School Computer Science: Greening Webpage (2009)

Future Goals: These are the projects we plan on having the students complete.

  • Pre-Calculus Honors & Adv. Pre-Calculus: Instead of doing the Finance Project, have the students study the past 10 years of the emerging stock markets (e.g. Brazil, India, etc.) (2011)
  • Algebra 2: Traveling Salesman Project (2011)
  • Geometry and Geometry Honors: Flag Project - student will create accurately scaled flags from their cultural background using concepts of similarity (2010)
  • Geometry: Rewrite the Dream House project to become Dream “Green” House project. (2011)
  • 6th Grade: Math Games Around the World (2011)
  • Math 6: Recyclying Survey. (2010)
  • Algebra 7: Household Greenhouse emissions and walkability. (2010)
  • Algebra 1: Exchange Rates around the world. (2011) Trees in our municipality. (2011)
  • AP Calculus 1: Amazing Calculus Race. (2011)
  • AP Statistics: Growth rates of propagules. (2010-2011) (Interdisciplinary with Environmental Science)
